Miners at home – what is realistic with noise and waste heat

An air-cooled miner is louder than a vacuum cleaner and heats like a large fan heater, both without a break. What throttling, air kits, an enclosure and hydro really achieve.

An Antminer S21 runs at 76 dB(A) according to the manual and continuously gives off about 3.5 kW of heat. A vacuum cleaner comes to about 70 dB(A). In living space, both are too much. With a few measures operation is still possible, just not with every unit in every place.

Where the noise comes from

From the fans, not from the chips. Small fans at high speed produce a high, piercing tone. This tone passes through doors and ceilings and is more disturbing than the reading in decibels suggests.

Four ways to make it quieter

1. Throttling. The power can be reduced via firmware. Less heat means lower fan speed. This is the cheapest measure and improves efficiency along the way.

2. Air kits. Conversion kits replace the stock fans with larger, slower-spinning ones. Important for your expectations: an air kit does not necessarily make the unit quieter. It changes the noise profile. The high whine becomes a deeper hum, which is much more pleasant and easier to insulate against.

3. Enclosure. An insulated box with sound-attenuated air ducts lowers the level the most. The ducts must be large enough, otherwise the heat builds up and the fans spin faster.

4. Hydro. With no fans in the unit, the pump remains. The noise moves to the dry cooler, which you can set up outside, or disappears if the heat goes into a buffer tank.

The waste heat

3.5 kW is equivalent to a large fan heater on its highest setting. A closed room quickly becomes too warm for the unit itself.

  • Winter: The exhaust air heats the basement, workshop or garage. It can be routed into an adjacent room through a duct.
  • Summer: The exhaust air has to go outside, through a duct in the wall or window. The intake air needs the same cross-section.
  • Dust: A filter in front of the intake saves you cleaning the heatsinks.

What is realistic

  • Flat: no full-size miner. For that there are small home units with much less power.
  • Basement or garage at the house: an air-cooled unit, throttled, with an air kit or enclosure and exhaust air to the outside.
  • Plant room with a heating connection: hydro, with the heat in the heating circuit.

You need the right electrical connection in every case. A household socket is not enough for any unit of this class.
