Understanding hashrate bins – why the same model is sold in several bins

An S21+ Hyd with 358 TH/s and one with 395 TH/s are the same model. Where the bins come from, what really differs between them and how you choose the right one.

The same model is often listed in the shop with several hashrate figures. These are not different units but performance grades of the same design. In the trade they are called bins.

Where the bins come from

No two chips are alike. The same production run yields chips that reach their frequency with little voltage and others that need more. The manufacturer tests the finished units and sorts them by the hashrate they hold stably. Each bin is sold with its own value.

Examples from our shop

  • Antminer S21+ Hyd: 358 or 395 TH/s, both with 15 J/TH (Bitmain also lists 319 and 338 TH/s)
  • Antminer S21e Hyd: 288, 310 or 332 TH/s, all with 17 J/TH
  • Antminer S19 XP+ Hyd: 252, 266, 279 or 293 TH/s, all with 19 J/TH
  • Antminer S21 Pro+: 234 or 245 TH/s, both with 15 J/TH (Bitmain also lists 220 TH/s)

What stays the same and what does not

The same: efficiency. It is stated with the same value for all bins of a model. So every bin earns the same per kilowatt-hour.

Different: hashrate and power draw. The higher bin computes more and draws correspondingly more power. An S21+ Hyd with 395 TH/s draws around 5.9 kW, one with 358 TH/s around 5.4 kW.

What this means for the site

Size the power connection and cooling for the bin you order, not for the value from a general datasheet. With ten units, the difference between two bins adds up to several kilowatts.

How to choose the bin

  1. Compare the price per terahash. Divide the unit price by the hashrate. The bins are usually close to each other, but not identical.
  2. Find the limit at the site. If the number of rack spaces is limited, the higher bin gives more hashrate per space. If the connection is limited, the bin does not matter, because every kilowatt earns the same.
  3. Availability. Not every bin is in stock at all times. A lower one that can be delivered immediately beats a higher one with a waiting time.

Mixed bins in one installation

Technically this is not a problem. Each unit runs on its own. Note the bin for each unit so that you know in operation which hashrate you can expect from which unit. A unit that stays permanently below its bin has a fault, not a bad bin.

Bin and firmware

With third-party firmware, the hashrate of a unit can be adjusted. The bin then tells you where the unit stands ex works and gives an indication of how much headroom its chips have.
